It was a good run for Wild Rose Country - Alberta was five for five in WSOP-C Calgary Main Events coming into this sixth edition of the big game. The streak is over now thanks to Chatham, Ontario's Nicholas Teeuwen who put on a strong performance today to take it down.
Teeuwen has been very close to a ring here a couple of times already. He had two third-place finishes last May here at Deefoot, as well as three final table finishes in Circuit Online events on WSOP.ca in Ontario. Now, he finally made it through to the big finish here in May 2024, breaking the Alberta winning streak in the process.
The win today was his biggest cash by far with his previous best runs for $22k here at Deerfoot in the Fall Super Stack last year, followed by $20k in the $1k here at WSOP-C Calgary last May, In fact, this win today represents close to 3 times his previous lifetime earnings on Hendon.
The final hand of the game was a bit of a dream spot for him. He was the big leader and runner-up John Scalise shoved his short stack from the small blind. Teeuwen looked down at pocket kings and snapped it off, way ahead.
It wasn't without sweats though. Scalise was in with and flopped a gutshot draw before turning his queen, giving him a lot more outs for the river than he started with. The river bricked for Scalise though and Teeuwen was the proud owner of the new WSOP-C ring.
John Scalise was in tough against Nick Teeuwen heads up tonight. Teeuwen has been close to a ring here a few times and he seemed determined to close it out this time. They started heads up pretty even, but Teeuwen was aggressive in attacking to chip him down.
He was all in a few times and managed to stay alive, but was never able to get back up into a lead. In the final hand, Teeuwen had about a 4:1 advantage, and Scalise worker up with suited cards and open-shoved, but ran into it.
John Scalise:
Nick Teeuwen:
There was no miracle for Scalise as he was looking for clubs, two-pair, or straight cards to stay alive. He flopped a gutty and turned his queen on , but it wasn't enough, and he had to settle for 2nd tonight.

river. Nick Teeuwen called but mucked when Scalise showed queen-six for the turned boat. They are about less than 10 minutes from the next break.
John Scalise had chipped down to 5.325 million when he shoved nines and Nick Teeuwen called with ace-four. Scalise flopped a set to take it down but the double basically just put him back to 2:1 down.
There are just over 30 minutes remaining in Level 34 and Nick Teeuwen is the chip leader now with about a 2:1 advantage. There haven't been many showdowns so far but Teeuwen is forcing the action on most hands.

There's still a race to decide if the Main Event title will stay in Alberta or not as Nicholas Teeuwen is still in the running to take it to Ontario.

Scalise led out for 2 million on the river and Huang mucked quickly.
David Labchuk raised the button to 550k, then hit the tank when Toms Varghese shoved for 2.2 million from the small blind, with the comment "Good luck to me". He eventually mucked his hand for Varghese to chip up to over 3 million.

John Scalise limped the small blind, then snap-called when Nicholas Teeuwen shoved the big. Teeuwen looked to be in rough shape with against
, but he hit a five on the flop then ran out to hearts for the big double to stay in the game.
Nicholas Teeuwen raised to 500k under the gun and John Scalise defended his big blind. Scalise check-called for $400k on the flop. He check-called again for 900k on the
turn and both players checked the
river. Teeuwen mucked when Scalise shoved
for the rivered trips.
With five players left, only Teeuwen has the chance to break the Alberta Main Event dominance. Every previous Main has been won by an Alberta player, and it's looking good for that streak to go six for six now with four of the five remaining players, including the chip leader, hailing from Wild Rose Country. Don't count Teeuwen out though - He's been within spitting distance of a rin here a few times already, and he looks hungry to finally take one down.
While I missed the action directly, winner John Scalise related the hand to me as the break began. It was the final hand before the break when John Scalise raised the button to 450k and Jack Hardcastle called from the big blind. Hardcastle check-called 400k on the two-diamond flop and both players checked the brick turn card.
The river brought both the flush and a four-card straight on the board and Hardcastle bet nearly his whole stack with 1.5 million, then called the rest off when Scalise shoved. Scalise had the nut flush with ace-queen of diamonds while Hardcastle rivered the top end of the straight with jack-nine, but it wasn't enough and the "British phenom" will have to wait until next time for his first Circuit ring.

Jack Hardcastle raised to 400k from the hijack and John Scalise called from the big blind. Scalise check-called for 300k on the flop and they both checked the

It was limped preflop between John Scalise in the small blind and Nicholas Teeuwen in the big. They both checked through the flop and Scalise led for 325k on the
turn. Teeuwen called to the
river but then folded to a bet of 500k from Scalise.
Nicholas Teeuwen raised to 400k from the button, and David Labchuk defended his big blind with a call. It all kicked off on the flop when Labchuk check-raised from 300k to 1 million, then snapped off the shove from Teeuwen.

river bricked out, and Teeuwen's ace-high flush was the winner.
Nicholas Teeuwen opened to 400k from the cutoff, and he was called by Jack Hardcastle on the button, as well as David Labchuk and Toms Varghese in the blinds. They all checked the flop, but on the

The board read and Zeyu Huang checked his big blind, then raised the bet from David Labchuk on the button. Huang made it 1.175 million, but Labchuk re-popped it all-in for 6.825 million.
That sent Huamg into the blender as he agonized over the spot. "I have an overpaid," he said quietly a few times as he was considering his decision. He finally elected to give up his hand as the call was for most of his stack.
In the next hand, it folded to Jack Hardcastle in the small blind and he shoved the short stack. David Labchuk called him off from the big for a race between his fours and Hardcastle's king-queen overs. Hardcastle flopped a queen and turned a king to take the fours out and grab a double to stay alive.
Jack Hardcastle opened under the gun to 300k and Nicholas Teeuwen defended his big blind with a call. He check-called for 275k on the flop, and again for 700k on the
turn. They both checked the
river and Teeuwen's jack-three out-turned Hardcastle's ace-seven.
The Main Event is underway with the final 6 players in action. Today the play down to a winner with everyone so far guaranteed at $45k with the winner set to pocket almost $230k.
Day 2 is over with 6 players left in the action and Nicholas Teeuwen leads the way with a bit more than 9.5 million chips. Zeyu "Skytrain" Huang is about 1.5 million behind, while David Labchuk, who won his second ring in the Seniors this series, is in third and looking for his third ring and first non-seniors ring.

Hardcastle flopped top pair, but Huang flopped the set for the win. Day 2 is now complete and the final six players are bagging up for the night. Stay tuned for the final 6 chip stacks shortly.
David Labchuk raised the button to 250k, then called when Toms Varghese reraised the small blind to 610k. On the flop Varghese check-called for 400, then both players checked down through the
turn and river. Varghese had the best ace with ace-queen, but the ace-nine for Labchuk got there on the river, though he elected not to value bet his two pair.
John Scalise opened the button to 275k but Jack Hardcastle repopped it to 900k. Scalise called to the flop where Hardcastle led for 500k and took it down.
They are now 15 minutes away from the end of Day 2.
David Labchuk opened early to 250k and Gaetano Buda shoved the small blind for 860k. Labchuk asked for a count, then called it off.
Gaetano Buda:

John Scalise raised to 350k early, and Jack Hardcastle called from the button. Scalise check-called for 300k on the flop and both players checked the
turn.
When Scalise checked again on the river, Hardcastle pushed out 500k. Scalise called quickly, and his ace-queen was just ahead of the ace-jack for Hardcastle.
It was a bit of a brutal beat that sent Ki Nam to the rail. David Labchuk opened under the gun to 200k and Ki Nam, to his immediate left, clicked the all-in button. It folded back around to Labchuk, who called with pocket eights, only to run into the rockets.

The dinner break has just begun in the Main Event with 17 players still left in the game. They'll be back in action in about 45 minutes for the final four levels of Day 2 play.
They are about 10 minutes from the dinner break now with the field just breaking down to the final two tables. Brett Worton and Vincent Lam were the most recent players to hit the rail.
The clock was paused for about 15 minutes as the payouts have just jumped above 10k, so players are required to fill out some forms for AGLC with any $10k+ cash. The clock is running again with 40 minutes to play in Level 24 with the dinner break scheduled after this level.
Once they return for dinner, they'll play four more levels in Day 2 before the remaining players bag up for the night.
Level 24 has just begun with 22 players left in the field. Full prizes (with the exception of 42nd place, who hasn't had their payslip authorized yet) are listed under the Payouts tab now. Meanwhile, below is a look at a few faces from the final 25 players in the field.

They are down to 27 players left now and they are redrawing for new seats at the final three tables. There are just over 30 minutes to play in Level 23 with the dinner break scheduled following Level 24 in about 90 minutes.
They are down to 30 players left in the Main now, and most of the prizes are updated. 32nd and 42nd places haven't checked in to get their payslips authorized yet, so those spots are blank, but the rest of the prizes to 31st place are now updated.
The final 32 players are now back in their seats for the start of Level 23.
The final 33 players are on their second break of the day now, and it looks like Zeyu 'Skytrain' Huang is the current leader with about 3.2 million in front of him. John Scalise and Tommy Nguyen are both playing more than 2.5 million.

They are down to 35 players remaining now on the final dour tables with just over 15 minutes to play in Level 22. The second break of Day 2 is scheduled at the end of this level with the 45-minute dinner break scheduled for the end of Level 24 in about 2.5 hours.
They are nearing four tables now with 38 players left in the Main as Level 22 begins.
There are about 15 minutes to play in Level 21 and they are down to 42 players remaining in the Main Event now. Paul Brar was among the recent busts with many of the Main Event busts heading straight over to the high roller, which is also in action this afternoon in the Chrome room.
They are down to 44 players left in the game now with Julius Roque and Shane Chief among the recent players to hit the rail. There are now just over 30 minutes to play in Level 21 with the average stack a bit more than 40 bigs right now.
Full prizes to 49th place are updated under the Payouts tab now with the field down to 48 remaining with 45 minutes to play in Level 21. Among the recent busts were Eric Davis, Roman Gallivan, Tang Jooce, and Andrew Goosen.
They are down to 52 remaining now shortly after the start of Level 21. Day 2 is scheduled to play until the end of Level 28 with any remaining players returning for the final day of play on Monday.
They are down to 54 players left in the game now as the first break of Day 2 approaches. Among the recent busts were DJ Sharma, Duff Charette (who won his first ring earlier in the series), Hua Zang (who was third in the Monster Stack), and Chris Clisby.
They are down to 62 remaining in Day 2 of the Main Event now. Among the players to hit the rail early today was Day 2 chip leader Nate Drury. I didn't see the hand, but it looked like he took a bad beat before heading to the cash cage, Other recent busts include previous Main Event winner Cody McKay, Andy Truong, Jason Tran, Mal Hagan, and Johnny Yu, who managed to turn a max-late entry in Day 1c into a pretty decent cash of $3,936. Yu, at least, says he plans to jump into today's high roller as well, so he should do well with more of a full stack.
Full prizes to 63rd place are loaded into the Payouts tab now.
There are 68 players left in the game with just under 10 minutes left in the opening level of Day 2. I am still trying to clean up my admin work for the High Roller and last night's results, so I'm still watching the game from the sidelines.
They are down to 75 players left now with just under 40 minutes to play in Level 19. Prizes to 76th place are updated under the Payouts tab.
The action is underway for Day 2 and there are already calls of seat empty from various parts of the floor. They are already down to 77 and dropping fast. The early part of my day will likely be mostly updating payouts in the backend while I clean up my final posts from yesterday and get set up for the high roller, but I should be able to start watching the action in an hour or two.

Day 2: May 12, 2024, Noon
Day 3: May 13, 2024, Noon
Blinds: 60 Min
Entries: 911
Prizes: $1,380,165
There are four players coming into Day 2 with a million or more, but Nate Drury has the biggest stack of them all with just over 1.3 million. He leads Qi Xi Huang, Mike "GoLeafsGoEh" Leah, and Tommy Nguyen in the millionaire club. Sunny Lubana might be an honourary member as the 5th-place stack coming to Day 2 with 910k.
Full stacks for Day 2 are under the Chip Counts tab. I won't have eyes on an official prize list tonight, but based on my estimates, I expect 1st place to be around $200k, but I'll update the prizes ASAP in the morning.
The Day 2 action kicks off at noon on Sunday and they'll play until the end of Level 28, it required. If there are still players in the game, they'll return Monday at noon to finish it out.
