The 30 qualifying stacks for Day 1b are loaded in the Chip Counts tab, but Mark Mendoza will be the player with the big stack for Day 2. He's got almost 2 million in his bag, and a decent chunk of those came late in the game when he spiked a three-outer against Zhi Jiang. Jiang, who has been running pretty good lately with a fourth place in the recent Main Event at PPT Argyle.
Jiang was facing a preflop shove from Mendoza over his open-raise and after some time in the tank he made a disgusted call. He was in great shape with pocket jacks against ace-jack, leaving Mendoza drawing to one of the three remaining aces or running cards. There's an old adage in poker -- three ways to play jacks and they are all wrong -- and it proved true for Jiang as Mendoza flopped his ace to leave Jiang on about 100k. He bagged a start stack for Day 2, however, and if I were compiling a list of players who could come back on Day 2 from a start stack, Jiang would be high on it.
In total, 10 players from 1b bagged 1 million or more for a total of 14 millionaire stacks coming back for Day 2The top six will all be from Day 1b, which isn't a huge surprise given how many more chips were in play for the second flight. Below is a list of the millionaires from 1b, but it's worth noting that Cindy Grabia was on her way to bagging more than a million when she made a huge fold in a big pot that took her down to her bagging stack. It was near the very end of play, and had she called and lost she'd have been coming back to Day 2 with fumes. Irish pro and prolific poker author Dara O'Kearney says "The wrong fold is less damaging than the wrong call" so, right or wrong, I'm calling it a good fold to prerve a stack of 765k.
Stay tuned for Day 2 seats in less than an hour.

Ron Lauzon was the bubble to Day 2 tonight after a brutal beat. He was in with ace-queen of hearts and called by king-ten of hearts. There were even two more hearts on the flop, but also a king. Another king on the river sealed the Edmonton player's fate for today.
The bags are now coming out for 30 players. I'll post today's chip counts shortly, and have seat assignments out within an hour or two at most. The cashing players from today's flight are below.

They are down to 31 left now after Khaly Dang took a bit of a beat. She got her remaining 150k in from the small blind against a cutoff raise and was in good shape with ace-eight over king-nine. She was running for a double through the turn, but a nine on the river sent her out in 32nd tonight. The next elimination will bring out the bags.
They are down to 32 players left at the start of Level 23, so it seems likely the bags will come out sometime in this level.

There are 38 players left in 1b now with about 15 minutes to play in Level 22.
There are about 10 minutes left in Level 21 and the field is down to 43 remaining. It looks like tonight will go a little later than last night, which finished with about 8 minutes left in Level 22, about 32 minutes from now. With 13 players still to lose before they get out the early bags, it seems likely this will play closer to Level 23 or into it.
Here are the payouts today so far.

Players will be back in action for Level 21 in about 10 minutes, and I had a look at some of the bigger stacks. George Mounsef has had a rough couple of levels and is down to about 700k now with his chips distributed around the table. Srinivas Gottiparthi has chipped up a bit to about 900k, and Cindy Grabia is over a million now with almost 1.2. Anthony Smith is holding onto the chips he got from his double, still sitting at around 1.1 million. Bracelet and Ring winner Jerry Li has also chipped up in recent play with about 750k in front of him now.
Meanwhile, they are down to 50 left, just 20 players off the end of the night with four levels left on the schedule. See below for all the cashing players so far.

George Mounsef is the current leader now and looks to be the only player over 1 million. He's sitting on about 1.5 million even after doubling Brian Anderson's short stack recently. BA shoved just over 100k from the cutoff with king-nine of spades and Mounsef called off from the button. Mounsef had deuces, but BA spiked a nine on the turn for the win.
Cindy Grabia looks to be second now with just under a million, and Two-Day $1k final tableist Srinivas Gottiparthi has about 800k.

Now that the bubble is over, the action is moving fast. Five players have busted so far in the money -- Paul Brar (Calgary), Michael Noor Karin Chatur, Iam Modder, and Shawn Blair have all cashed out so far for a min-cash. I'll post a spreadsheet shortly with cashing players as the pace is fairly brisk at the moment.
They are down to 89 players and now in the money in Day 1b at the end of Level 17.
The bubble is nearing for Day 1b with 92 players left in the game and 89 paid spots. Level 17 is about halfway finished now.
Level 16 is nearly complete and the 1b field is down to 98 players left just 9 away from the min-cash spot. They'll take a break in about 2 minutes, and then return to almost certainly hit the bubble early in Level 17.
They are down to 101 players left in Day 1b now with a bit more than 10 minutes to play in Level 16. At the current pace, it looks like they'll be on the bubble sometime in Level 17.
Level 16 has just kicked off with 112 players left on the board. It looks like the numbers are being updated more regularly now, so I'm thinking that's a pretty accurate number right now and it means they are a few more than 20 players away from the early money spots tonight.
There will be a break following this level, with 8 more levels of poker and another break scheduled before the official end of the day.
Here is a look at the prizes to be handed out tonight. There are somewhere between 126 and 117 players left in the game now with 10 minutes to play in Level 15.

The Day 1b prizes are in and the field today is confirmed at 592 for 881 total entries. That puts the combined prizes at $290,730 with 89 players getting a piece of the prizes from today's flight. At least 30 players will bag a stack for tomorrow, while 89-31 will exit the game with cash in hand tonight. Level 15 has about 20 minutes left to play and they could play as late as the end of Level 24 tonight, but as the 1b field is already less than 40 off the money, it seems likely they will still bag up a little early with 30 players remaining.
I have eyes on the Day 2 prizes for tomorrow, and the winner will likely be pocketing something like $47k for their troubles, but I'm not posting the full Day 2 prizes until later as they will change if we don't make it down to 30 players tonight. Given the size of the field, that's at least a possibility for today.
Here is a look at a few of the stacks I counted at the dinner break. It looks like Zhi Yang is the chip leader now with more than 455k, while Ziewn Liu was at 420k.
Player |
Chips |
Zhi Gang Yang | 455,000 |
Ziwen Liu | 420,000 |
Regan Duong | 315,000 |
Gusto Katievo | 288,000 |
Gaetano Buda | 170,000 |
The numbers are still being verified, but it looks like 1b topped out at 592 entries for more than $195k in prizes today alone. That puts the combined total at 881 entries for $290,730 in prizes, assuming the numbers hold. With no changes, 89 players will be getting a piece of the money from today, with at least 30 of them moving to Day 2.
I'll confirm all the numbers shortly once the Day 1b prizes are posted.
There are about 30 minutes remaining in the dinner break and entries for the Monster Stack, and the prizes are sniffing at $290k. There are 582 entries so far for 1b putting the combined total at 871 for $287,430 in total prizes.
There are just over 15 minutes left in Level 12, and this is the final level for entries. The 1b field is up to 571 now for a combined total of 860 and $283,800 in prizes. Entries are open throughout the dinner break that follows this level, but the Monster field will be closed when they sit down for Level 13 in about an hour.
They are closing in on 550 entries for 1b now with about 15 minutes to play in Level 11. There are currently 833 entries across both days for prizes of $274,890 with about 75 minutes left to enter the game.
The combined field is just 7 players away from 800 total entries with 504 on the board now in Level 10. There are about 20 minutes to play in this level and two more levels of entry to follow with the reg-desk shutting down in almost exactly two hours. Current prizes are sitting at a bit more than $260k.
They are up to 491 entries in 1b for 780 total across both starting flights now. The prizes are just shy of $260k now and Level 10 is just underway.
With this many people in the room it's nearly impossible for me to be sure I've found the big stacks, or counted accurately, but in my last wander around the room I noticed a few growing stacks. It looks like KKPoker rep Gusto Katievo may have the biggest one at the moment with about 250k in front of him, though it should be noted that he's at a table with Malcolm Bolger to his right, and while I was counting the chips, Bolger quipped "He won't have them for long."
Nate Drury is also in town for this one from BC and he's stacking up, as usual. He often has a big stack in these and today is no exception with about 240k in front of him. He is the kind of player who wears his heart on his sleeve at the table, and in January he suffered a particularly bad beat and was overheard outside the casino loudly exclaiming "I hate this game." Today, as I was counting his stack, he smiled and said "By the way, I LOVE this game."
DJ Sharma is also in the mix today. He told me the other night this is his favorite event as it's the first one he had a really deep run in a few years ago. He's sitting with about 120k, but he got them in typical Sharma-time action. He was all in blind for a 40k starting stack and got there for a big triple.
See below for a look at some of the other big stacks I saw out there, but again, no guarantees these are accurate, or the biggest in the room.
Player |
Chips |
Gusto Katievo | 250,000 |
Nate Drury | 240,000 |
Sachin Sehgal | 200,000 |
Mike Lloyd | 180,000 |
Dwight Czyz | 170,000 |
Alex Jurca | 160,000 |
Julus Roque | 140,000 |
Karim Chatur | 140,000 |
DJ Sharma | 120,000 |
Chris Alcindor | 110,000 |
The 1b field is up to 471 as they return from the break following Level 8. Level 9 is now underway and there are four levels of poker left in the entry period, plus the 45-minute dinner break to follow Level 12. The combined field is not at 760 so both 500+ for today and 800+ for the whole event are well within sight.
The combined field after Level 8 of the final Monster Stack flight is 748 now for prizes of more than $245k in total. There are still four levels of poker, plus the 45-minute dinner break before the Monster field is complete, so the numbers will continue to grow. The 1b field is now around 460 entries so 500+ for 1b is actually within sight with about 3 hours exactly left to enter.
I put together a quick video of the Sundance room packed to the rafters this afternoon. All seats are currently full and there is alternate seating in progress, but the lines for a seat have never been longer than 10 players deep that I've seen today so even if a player has to wait for a seat, it won't be a long one. See below for a look at the event today.
Well, 700 total entries and 400 for 1b have both been left in the dust now as today's field is inching toward 450 now with 724 total entries in the game across both flights. They need another 35 entries today to push the prizes to $250k and with more than 3 hours still left to enter, that number is still well within sight.
There are just over 10 minutes to play in Level 7 and the 1b field is now climbing towards 410 entries and the combined field is just shy of 700 in total. That puts the total prizes at almost $230k and climbing with more than 3 hours left to enter the game today.
Level 7 is just underway with 393 entries on the board for 1b, and 682 across both starting flights now. That pushes the combined prizes above $225k, and it looks like bot 400 for today, and 700 for the whole game, are easily within reach today. Can we find 500 today? That might be a stretch, but the 1b field will be well over 400 before the dust settles.
Bash Ramahi is among the other new faces I've seen today. He arrived in town from Edmonton last night and is in his first event of the series here today. Among the other players I spotted so far are Ryan Cairns and Chris Alcindor, both of whom were on the FT of the Turbo $1k last night, as well as Karin Chatur, John Foley, Wayne Hoffert (who was 3rd in the Black Chip this past weekend), Stefan Maloney, KKPoker ambassador David Ko, Ali Razzaq, Chun Kwan, Shane Brotherwood, and JJ Johnstone.
That's hardly a comprehensive list, but it's a start.
Level 6 is just underway and the total field is up to 646 now for $213k in prizes across both days. The 1b field is closing in on 360 now so 400+ is completely within sight still.
The other new face I just spotted in the crowd is my occasional shadow and "mini-me" Alek Gillies. He's not working the keys this time around, or sitting in a dealer chair. Instead he's at the felt trying to build a stack.
There are still more than four hours left in entries for the second flight of the Monster Stack and the prizes are already over $200k. There are 342 entries on the board right now for 1b prizes of more than $112k and combined prizes of $208,230 right now.
The Sundance room is full with alternate seating in effect, though the line waiting for seats is pretty short. Right now, no one is waiting, but about 5 minutes ago about five players were waiting to get seats.
Entries are open until shortly after 6 pm tonight, so it seems likely today's field could easily cap 400. With such a big field there are inevitably a lot of familiar faces in the crowd, but a couple of new faces (or in one case, voices lol) I've seen for the first time today include Brain "BA" Anderson, Ashkan Razavi, and Malcolm Bolger. I'll let you guess which of those was the one I "heard" before I saw lol.
Event #9: | $400 Monster ($330 + $70) |
Date: | Day 1a: Aug 13, 2024, 11 am Day 1b: Aug 14, 2024, 11 am Day 2: Aug 15, 2024, noon |
Blinds: | 30/45 Min |
Start Stack: | 40,000 |
Late Entry: | 12 Levels (~6:15 pm) |
Day 1 Ends: | 24 Levels (~12:45 am) or 5% of Field |
The Monster is coming over the hill! Tuesday marks the opening flight of the Monster Stack with action getting underway at 11 am. Wednesday is a repeat of Tuesday for Day 1b.
Players get a monster 40k stack to start the day, and Day 1 levels will play for 30 minutes. Players have 12 levels of poker to buy in or rebuy, and, including breaks, that should put the last chance to enter each Day 1 flight at about 6:15 pm. Day 1 will play for a maximum of 24 levels with a hard stop at about 12:45 am, but they'll bag up early if the field hits 5% earlier than that. This will be a Day 1 payout out event, so players who finish between 15% and 5% will get some money as they leave.
I won't likely have eyes on Day 1a of this one, except to report numbers and the final results and stacks at the end of the day as my main Tuesday focus is Day 2 of the $1k followed by the Turbo $1k. However, I should be around for most of Wednesday's Day 1b and all of Day 2 on Thursday.
John Estner bagged the big stack from the 289 entries on 1a. He was one of four stacks of 1 million or more with Justin Meng in 5th just below 1 million.
